It’s finally time to turn off the boiler. Or it will be soon-- the weather still threatens to dip uncomfortably below freezing at night in some areas. But the warm season will come soon enough. And every year, we hear the same question: “what should I do to prepare my boiler for its off season?”
Fortunately, the answer is that you don’t have to do much! Modern boilers are built to handle the off season without much care or preparation. You don’t have to flush or flood your boiler if you don’t want to.
The best thing you can do at the end of this heating season is to prepare your boiler for next heating season. In particular, check for any leaks in any part of your system. From the sight glass to the feed/return pipes to the valves on your radiators themselves. While you’re doing a sight check, also check for sags in your pipes, or anything else that doesn’t look right.
If you’re handy, you can adjust your pilot, clean the burners and fire box, check your gauges, and make a number of other small improvements. If you’re not, we’re glad to come out and do a full inspection of your system and make recommendations that will ensure your comfort next heating season.
